BOSTON — A New Hampshire woman who is critically ill with gastrointestinal anthrax most likely swallowed spores while participating in a community drumming circle, state health officials said Tuesday.
The woman was among some 60 people who attended the drumming session on Dec. 4 at the United Campus Ministry near the University of New Hampshire in Durham, said Dr. Elizabeth A. Talbot, an adviser to the state’s Division of Public Health Services.
Investigators found traces of anthrax on two African drums and an electrical outlet in the room where the event took place, Dr. Talbot said, and are theorizing that the woman swallowed spores that were aerosolized by the drumming. The state has not identified the woman because of privacy concerns.
Dr. Talbot said the anthrax detected on the drums was a naturally occurring strain that frequently appears in soil. Animals that ingest contaminated soil can pass the disease to people who handle their hides. Most of the drums at the session were made with animal hides, she said.

| I want to LARP |
[30 Dec 2009|02:38am] |
Except with people I'd actually want to chill with in regular non-RP life. For example, I would really want to start a vampire LARP where we just hang upside-down from railings in the music buildings smoking tons of cigarettes and have complicated vampire romances with one another. Or a sweet elf LARP in which we all pretend to be the same size as squirrels and we can all be named after nuts and berries. Something like that. But if you like Pocky and you're U.S. born then you can't play. Sorry. Also if you're not kind of bangable you can't be in it because in my LARPs there is definitely going to be a lot of doing it. Also no sXe because there will be a fuck ton of vino.
Alumni welcome, drop-outs not (fuck you).
Anyone interested?

According to Air Canada, and a number of other airlines, these TSA regulations are in place:
"""Under new rules enacted by Transport Canada and the U.S. Transportation Security Administration, passengers and their carry-on baggage will be subject to full searches both at airport screening points and prior to boarding at the aircraft gate area.
In addition, new rules imposed by Transport Canada will limit the amount of carry-on baggage to one item per person travelling on flights from Canada to the United States.
New rules imposed by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration also limit on-board activities by customers and crew in U.S. airspace that may adversely impact on-board service. Among other things, during the final hour of flight customers must remain seated, will not be allowed to access carry-on baggage, or have personal belongings or other items on their laps. """
Good god, I know this whole incident with the fireworks/explosives guy just wet down, but couldn't they impose regulations that actually ADDRESSED THE FUCKING PROBLEMS?
And lets not get me started on the sanitary issues that can and probably will arise from passengers being forced to stay seated for the last hour.
EDIT: MORE:
For all United States bound aircraft originating in a foreign country and including Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands:
- Passengers will not be able to leave their seat from approximately one (1) hour prior to landing. The cockpit will inform in-flight personnel when this should be enforced. - In-flight and cockpit personnel must refrain from making any PA announcements regarding the position of the aircraft or landing announcements. Cockpit personnel will use the IF alarm system to warn in-flight personnel to take their seats prior to landing. - Passengers will be allowed one carry-on item or one personal item and will not be able to access this item during the one (1) hour period prior to landing. - No items can be used/held/accessed/accessible by any passenger, including personal electronic devices, magazines, newspapers, books, etc. during the one (1) hour pre-landing period. - In-flight personnel must collect First / Business Class PED one (1) hour and thirty (30) minutes prior to landing. - In-flight personnel must collect all pillows and blankets one (1) hour prior to landing. Pillows and blankets must be stored in the galley and not in overhead bins. - All on-board fixed IFE systems will be disabled and not available to our customers. Do not run or attempt to run any fixed IFE system.

I don't know who was doing astral projections last night, but I was forced to endure what seemed like three hours of a dream about changes in the PSGA officials. Just me, walking down the street, with random people coming up to me and saying "I'm the new assistant deputy secretary!"
It was simultaneously boring and weird.

does anyone understand this whole pass/no credit issue with gen. eds?
on the website it says: "Freshman Seminars, core courses or general education courses cannot be taken on a pass/no credit basis.", but i'm signed up to take RAD next semester to fulfill that absurd gym requirement and it says in the course description that it's graded on a pass/no credit basis. so maybe that means that i have to take something else...
also, how often do they let you slide by and graduate with only 1 credit in physical education (in case i do need to switch to another class)? i realize that many of these classes only count for 1 credit. i know a previous roommate was able to sneak under the radar with that one

| WGS textbook question |
[18 Dec 2009|02:45pm] |
Hi everyone,
I'm currently at CUNY City, and I took Intro to Women's Studies. (As a feminist, I wholeheartedly believe that this was the worst class ever.) For the class, I purchased "Women's Realities, Women's Choices" 3rd edition. Written by Hunter College WS collective, which leads me to believe that this book is used at Hunter. We didn't open it once at City. I've applied to transfer to Hunter in the Fall 2010, so I'm wondering- do you use this book in your WGS courses? Or should I just sell it?
Thanks =)
Mollie

| SECOND-SEMESTER HOUSING! |
[18 Dec 2009|01:19pm] |
Looking for an apartment off-campus??? My friend has a great sublet opportunity available; info below:
I have availability in a two bedroom apartment to sublet one of the rooms starting in January or February (negotiable). My roommate is female so we are preferably looking for a female roommate. The apartment is fully furnished including a television. You would only need to bring a bed/dresser. The apartment complex includes a full gym, an indoor swimming pool and two large patio areas, including 5 stainless steel charbroil grills. It is in the Bank Street Commons complex in down town White Plains with backdoor access to the White Plains metro north station. There is also a doorman / concierge and they offer a complimentary, small continental breakfast on the weekends. The rent would be $1,000 per month and would go until May. Perfect second semester scene. For more info, email me at Jeffrey.asmar@gmail.com.
SUMMATION: -$1k a month -Fully furnished (except bed/dresser) -Full gym -Indoor Swimming pool -Backdoor access to the White Plains metro north train station -Two large patio areas, one with 5 gas-operated grills -Weekend continental breakfast, coffee every morning -Garage parking available
